I am the product of all my past life experiences.
I was separated from my mom for a month at 2 years old; I was a brand manager in a large global company; I went through an abortion by myself at 25; I had a divorce at 32; I broke a bone dancing on the sidewalk; I went to grad school 10 years after my bachlor's degree... These are only a small sample of the life experiences I lived through.
Now I'm a clinical social worker, an EMDRIA-approved consultant, the developer of the Polyvagal-Informed Adaptive Information Processing (PIAIP) Theory, the Vividness Scale and EMDR 3.0. I didn't arrive at PIAIP from a lab. I arrived at it from working through my unprocessed life experiences, and from facilitating the same deep healing in my clients.
We are all products of our past life experiences.
Experiences that are fully processed become our resilience, our compassion, our wisdom. But we can only process fully when we are safe enough and resourced enough. When we detect a threat, survival priorities take over, and processing has to compromise. What goes unprocessed doesn't just sit there. It becomes the root of our struggles, our internal conflicts, and a reference for our future triggers. It changes our perception of reality and retunes our sense of safety. State dictates information processing, then unprocessed information retunes safety threshold.
This is the gist of PIAIP, a self-referential framework for trauma and recovery. This framework has wide implications on how we view and treat trauma across all modalities and healing practices. To learn more about PIAIP and its clinical implications, please read follow the RESEARCH page.
